Stop At: Silves, Silves, Faro District, Algarve
Silves, the Islamic capital of the Algarve, known in the 11th century for its development and prosperity, it was a cultural centre where the most brilliant poets, chroniclers and jurists in the region resided.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Castelo de Silves, Rua do Castelo, Silves 8300-144 Portugal
Built on top of a hill, the imposing Silves Castle is Roman in origin, but it was the Arabs who built the magnificent castle we see today, between the 8th and 13th centuries.
Built of Silves sandstone, the castle has the shape of an irregular polygon and a main gate flanked by two defensive towers, three turrets and seven sides.
This Castle is the best example of Arab military architecture in Portugal.

Stop At: Caldas de Monchique, Monchique 8550-998 Portugal
Caldas de Monchique (often called Termas de Monchique), it is a village but also a spa resort.
The quality of the water in the hills, called “sacred water” by many, has been famous since the time of the Roman occupation of the peninsula. There are eight springs from which the water comes with a PH of 9.5 – the most alkaline in the country.
Water from the Monchique serra is rich in numerous chemical components and is an ally in the treatment of various ailments (especially respiratory and digestive problems). The water breaks the surface between 27 and 31,5 degrees.

The houses of Monchique display many of the traditional features of the architecture in the Algarve – white walls, carved stonework, stripes of color around doors and windows – but with their “saia” chimneys (literally “skirt”) quite different from those found on this part of the country.
The narrow streets that wind up the steep hillside, revealing fresh and green views at every turn, lend the town a certain exoticism to which camellias, hydrangeas and fruit trees add a fragant suggestion of gradens and orchards. An opportunity to discover an aspect of the Algarve unlike any other.
Monchique is best visited on foot. A walk trough the steep streets of the town centre is rewarded with the views of magnificent hills, glimpsed between houses, and moments of calm in unsuspected corners.
