Boca do Inferno would have been an ancient cave, with a gigantic caldera, connected to the sea by an arch, through which the waves force their passage. When Portuguese expansion reached its peak in the 16th century, Cascais was one of the first places to have a lighthouse. The Guia lighthouse was built in 1610, and a small hermitage was built nearby, which has the following inscription: “Guide of the seamen”.
