Each day we will explore a large part of each one, so that at the end of these two days you will have an almost complete knowledge of the island of São Miguel.

On the 1st day we will explore and get to know Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, on the 2nd day, we will go to Furnas and the Northeast, each of these two days, days of full day tours.

What to Expect When Visiting Fenais da Luz, Azores, Portugal

Itinerary

Day 1: Sete Cidades & Lagoa do Fogo

Stop At: Vista do Rei Miradouro, Sete Cidades, Sao Miguel 9555-000 Portugal
One of the most visited places on the island of São Miguel, being for many visitors the most beautiful and stunning, this viewpoint in 2010, elected the Seven Cities as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal, in this place we have a magnificent and stunning view over the lagoon and parish of Sete Cidades.

Stop At: Igreja de Sao Nicolau, EN9-1A, Sete Cidades, Sao Miguel 9555-043 Portugal
The center of the parish of Sete Cidades, shows us a little bit of the daily life of this peaceful parish, in which most of its inhabitants live from agriculture, it is possible to take a break for a snack or visit the local church, as well how to see the lagoon that gave the parish its name.

Stop At: Lagoa das Empadadas, Serra Devassa, Sete Cidades, Sao Miguel 9240-113 Portugal
It is a picturesque place, if we arrive at the place on the day and at the right time, it will certainly be one of the most beautiful lagoons in São Miguel, inserted in the middle of an immense vegetation of Cryptomeria, the lagoons are garnished with azaleas giving a unique color in the spring. The Empadadas Lagoon are two small lagoons, with little depth and that are very close to each other is to take a short walk around it.

Stop At: Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, En9-1a, Sete Cidades, Sao Miguel 9555-043 Portugal
Located in the protected area of the Canary Lagoon, it is by many the most stunning and emblematic place on the whole island of São Miguel, this viewpoint is located at the top of the caldera of the Sete Cidades, where we can, with the weather conditions in our favor, have a almost 360º panoramic view, in which we can see the blue lagoon of Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Canário and Lagoa Rasa, although its access is not easy, for those who have difficulty walking, as you have to climb a little with a small incline accentuated.

Ribeira Grande being the second largest city in São Miguel, enjoy a short walk through the city center where you can see the bridge of the 8 arches, the municipal garden and the river that gave the city its name.

Stop At: Lagoa do Fogo, Miradouro da Serra Barrosa Agua de Pau, Sao Miguel Portugal
Located in the center of São Miguel, it is the most emblematic lagoon on the island, as it does not have many accesses and its viewpoint is located at one of the highest points, it is often conditioned by weather conditions, but it has an environment of great beauty and tranquility, with emphasis for its crystal clear waters, its peninsula and beach is one of the protected areas, also from this place we can see both sides of the island of São Miguel, as well as in the background the cities of Ponta Delgada, Lagoa and Ribeira Grande.

Operating since 1863, the Vieira ceramic factory has passed from generation to generation and has adapted to the times. In this way, we can visit the installations and learn about the whole process of making clay, including the creation of the pieces and their cooking and also by painting them.

Day 2: Furnas & Nordeste

Stop At: Caldeira das Furnas, Furnas, Povoacao, Sao Miguel 9675 Portugal
In the center of the village of Furnas, where we can see several boilers with boiling water, of volcanic origin, paying special attention to the Pero Botelho caldera, in addition to the boilers the visitor, we can see various sources of water with different flavors in particular to the sour water source

Stop At: Plantacoes de Cha Gorreana, Sao Miguel 9625-304 Portugal
Located in Gorreana, the Gorreana tea factory that has been operating since 1883, being a family business, has passed from generation to generation and withstood different crises. It is the largest tea factory in São Miguel, where it produces various types of tea, in which Green Tea and Black Tea (Pekoe, Orange Pekoe and Broken Leaf), are the most appreciated by locals and visitors. It is possible to visit and explore the facilities and get to know the whole process and preparation of tea and enjoy a cup of tea at the end of the visit. There is a trail through the plantation where you can get to know Gorreana’s tea plantations better.

The Northeast is a village and the smallest municipality of São Miguel, the majority of its population lives essentially from services and agriculture, when we reach the Northeast area we are escaped by peace, tranquility and the beauty of its viewpoints, park and road, in which the majority are well decorated, flowery and cared for. In the center of the Northeast we can visit the Church, the bridge and explore on foot a little of the daily life of the local population.

Stop At: Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeiroes, Estrada Regional Achada, 011, Sao Miguel 9630-024 Portugal
It is a park / garden that allows the visitor to get to know a beautiful waterfall that is close to the cascade of the Ribeira dos Caldeirões, in this park it is possible to visit some water mills, where people used to go to take the corn to grinding it is possible to take a relaxing walk through the park.

Stop At: Farol do Arnel, Rua Ribeira Do Ferreiro 117, Nordeste, Sao Miguel 9630-000 Portugal
