Stop At: Paul do Mar, Paul do Mar, Calheta, Madeira, Madeira Islands
This parish is located southwest of the island of Madeira and has about 900 inhabitants, in an area of 1700 m2. The name comes from its orography because it looks like a valley by the sea, under high rocks.
The sea gives this parish plenty of fish, especially migratory. This led to the appearance in this parish in 1912 of the canned tuna export industry. Even today we can see the chimney of the old factory, which testifies to this fact.
This parish is an important fishing center, whose product is used in local restaurants and is much appreciated by Madeirans and foreigners.
Paul do Mar, like neighboring Jardim do Mar, is a prime venue for surfers who can challenge the waves, considered by some of the best in Europe.
