Stop At: Balcoes de Ribeiro Frio, Er103 Parque Natural de Ribeiro Frio, Madeira 6160-206 Portugal

This is perhaps the most well known known in Madeira. As we walk along this footpath you will marvel at the display of light and shade filtering through the laurel and heather trees.

The trout swimming in the levada along side the path, dash for cover as they perceive our approach. As we near Lamaceiros, the view of Porto da Cruz and Eagle Rock far below are out of this world.

Stop At: Miradouro da Portela, Caminho do Lameirao, Machico, Madeira 9200-162 Portugal

The Ribeiro Frio to Portela taken hike is ranked one of the most challenging walks and covers 7 miles (11 km). Follow your expert guide through the indigenous flora and fauna of the laurisilva (laurel forest). Gain insight into the daily life of the Madeira people as you take in the breathtaking views of Porto da Cruz.

A considerable portion of the island acts as a protected conservation area, Madeira Natural Park. Walking these levadas is an ideal way to discover the rare plant life that thrives here.
