Central Caldeira of the main volcano of Faial Island is 2Km wide. It is a Protected Area with the border at at 1000m altitude.

The youngest portion of earth in Europe, the remains of the 1957 Capelinhos volcano still resemble a lunar landscape, reminding us the forces of nature.
