Leca do Bailio Trip Overview
You will start you northern Portugal adventure discovering the medieval centre of Guimarães. You will see why the historical center city -the birthplace of the nation- was warranted as UNESCO World Heritage.
Besides the ancient center city you will also visit the castle that accommodated the Counts of Portugal during the 10th and 11th century and the 15th century Palace of the ´Duques de Braganza`.
In Braga, you will find a religious city with more than 2000 years of history. You will visit Portugal’s oldest cathedral, the famous sanctuary and ancient attractions such as the 14th-century Castle of Braga and the ´Arco da Porto Nova´.
After lunch we will drive to Barcelos, where we will walk around in the historic center, famous for its colorful ceramics, medieval monuments and for creating Portugal’s national symbol – the rooster.
On Thursdays you can get involved in one of the oldest and biggest markets in Portugal.

Stop At: Largo da Oliveira, Guimaraes 4810 Portugal
The typical Largo da Oliveira is named after a miracle with a 500 years old olivetree what was situated on the square.
The square is surrounded by some 17th century traditional ´Porch Houses´ and the ´Nossa Senhora da Oliveira´ Church.
In the middle of the square there is a porch called “Padrão do Salado”.The porch referes to the succesfull battle of Salado in the 14th century.

The charming square of San Tiago is marked by the presence of the old City Hall building and some residencial buildings from the 17th and 18th century.

From the palace of the dukes we will walk though the typical narrow streets of the city. We will follow the ´street of santa maria´, and visit the 2 famous squares ´Praça de San Tiago´ and ´Largo de Oliveira´.

The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança was built in the 15th century by D. Afonso. He was the ´bastard´ son of King João I.
We will also visit the museum on the first floor of the palace with a collection of national and international antiques.

According to the legend the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, was baptized here. The presumed baptismal font that was used in the ceremony is kept here.

From the top of the mountains in Braga you will drive to Guimarães, the cradle of the nation, here you will discover the castle where the first King of Portugal was born and the chapel where he was baptised.

Enjoy the silence at the most peacefull sanctuary of Braga.
The sanctuary is build in neoclassical style and is the the largest Marian devotional shrine in Portugal, second only to the Sanctuary of Fátima.
