Stop At: 2480 Arrimal, Portugal
Arco da Memória (Memory Arc)
On the southwest hillside of Cabeço Gordo, almost coinciding with the administrative boundaries between Porto de Mos municipalities and Alcobaça, the Memory Arc it was built, probably in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century and was restored in 1830, by King Miguel, as shown in one of its inscriptions.

Arrimal large and the small lagoons are natural depressions of doline type on a high beauty scenery. Its bottoms are naturally waterproofed with clay and other sediments, allowing some rainwater accumulation.
The perfect spot for some birdwatching while enjoying the silence.

We find here the most fertile soils of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Nature Park. The red soils “Terra rossa” are called locally “Felgar”.

Porto de Mós Ecotrail – Lena’s old mine railway
In 1740, the coal extraction from Bezerra’s mine started, taking advantage of lignite levels of the Upper Jurassic. In 1928, was settled the only Mountain Mine Railway Line existing in Portugal, with an irregular path, in order to overcome Pevide sierra (Candeeiros sierra) with a slope steeper than 2% , on whose summit was opened an extensive tunnel (of Corredoura), now broken in two. Coming from Martingança, it passed by Batalha and Porto de Mós, following to Bezerra, near Serro Ventoso, where the coal extracted from this mine and from the one in Barrojeiras (Alcanadas) was carried.

Lets go off-road and descend the hills.
Old oak trees and luxuriant vegetation typical of Mediterranean climates are now a relic of what the ancient forest was in this territory.
The love of Mr. Elias for this territory made him built a cabana under the trees, for the visitors to relax and we are going there.
