Visit some of the caves on a boat trip. In some of the many caves of Berlenga Island there is enough water seepage along the walls which, along with the constant shade, stimulate growth of species such as Asplenium marinum and Lemna minor. The “Gruta do Espanhol”, nearby the beach of the “Carreiro do Mosteiro” is a good example of this habitat.
Stop At: Fortress São João Baptista, Arquipélago das Berlengas, 2520 Peniche, Portugal
Visit the Fort of S. João Baptista. Its military structure is the most significant construction of the Berlengas and the most emblematic element of the archipelago. Ordered to be built by D. Joãp IV in 1651.
