Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood and the most charming one, it’s considered the historic soul of Lisbon and its steep, cobblestoned lanes stand just as they were in medieval times. This area is best known for its fado houses and the great festivities of Lisbon which honors “Santo António” (St. Anthony) during the month of June, luring thousands of people into the streets. This neighbourhood resisted to the terrible earthquake of 1755 and this is one of the main reasons that contributed to the preservation of its authenticity. This charming area retains some of the Moorish atmosphere with its alleys, staircases and clothes drying on the windows.

On the 25th of august, 1988, this area was severely affected by a terrible fire which destructed partially this neighbourhood. Since then, owing to a renovation project coordinated by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, Chiado has recovered and features the highest real estate property prices in Portugal nowadays.
Considered the most emblematic and cosmopolitan neighbourhood of Lisbon, this area is full of all kind of shops, national and international fashion designers, ateliers, art galleries, bookstores, cafes, restaurants, bars, etc.
