A masterpiece of 16th-century architecture in Portugal, the Monastery of Jerónimos is listed as a National Monument and inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List (1983). It is located in one of Lisbon’s most noble areas, both historical and monumental setting overlooking the Tagus River. On the monastery’s imposing facade, extending for about three hundred meters, stands the Church’s richly decorated South Portal boasting images of Portugal’s Patron Saint, St. Michael the Archangel (on top), and Our Lady of Belém or Our Lady of Reis (at the center).

The dome of the cruise covers, in a single flight, a width of 30 meters. It represents the most finished realization of the late medieval ambition to cover the largest gap possible with the minimum of supports. In this free space, where all the royal symbolism is found, the profusion of ornaments reaches its peak.

On the left arm of the transept is buried in the remains of Cardinal-King D. Henrique and those of the sons of D. Manuel I. No right arm of the transept is found in the tomb of King D. Sebastião and the descendants of D. João III.

At the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, in Belém, next to Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (the Heironymite Monastery) there was a sugar cane refinery attached to a small general store. As a result of the 1820 liberal revolution, all convents and monasteries in Portugal were shut down in 1834, the clergy and laborers were expelled.

In an attempt at survival, someone from the monastery offered sweet pastries for sale in the shop; pastries that rapidly became known as ‘Pastéis de Belém’.

At that period the area of Belém was considered far from the city of Lisbon and mainly accessed by steamboats. At the same time, the grandeur of the monastery and the Torre de Belém (the Belém Tower) attracted visitors who soon grew used to savoring the delicious pastries that originated in the monastery.

The ground floor of this architectural jewel has 16 windows with cannons. The visit also includes a tour of the pits and holes where the prisoners were thrown into.

The tower has five floors which lead to a roof terrace. Each story is connected by a small and narrow spiral staircase, which, on the busiest days is a little overwhelming, having to wait your turn to climb and descend.

The floors are, from bottom to top: The Governor’s Hall, The Kings’ Hall, the Audience Hall, the Chapel, and Roof terrace.

Stop At: Padrao dos Descobrimentos Avenida Brasilia Belem, Lisbon 1400-038 Portugal

Created by Cottinelli Telmo (1897–1948) and the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida (1898–1975), Padrão dos Descobrimentos was first erected in 1940, in a temporary form, as part of the Portuguese World Exhibition, built with perishable materials. It had a light iron and cement frame, while the molded sculpture had a light iron and cement frame, while the molded sculpture was made of gypsum (formed of plaster and burlap, and reinforced by a wooden and iron structure).

Located at the north end of Avenida da Liberdade, at the top of Praça Marquês do Pombal, this is the largest park in Lisbon. Initially called Parque da Liberdade, it was renamed after the King of England who, in 1903, came to Lisbon to reaffirm an alliance between the two countries.
With twenty-five hectares, it results along a central axis materialized in the great avenue with a great grassy slope, offering unique corners and several valences.
