The current temple is located on the site of a church built in 1568, by order of Infanta D. Maria, daughter of D. This ancient church was built on the site of a mid-12th century temple, but was severely damaged by a storm in 1681. The first stone of the current building was laid the following year, in 1682. The work lasted so long that it gave rise to to the popular expression “works of Santa Engrácia” to designate something that never ends. The church was only completed in 1966, 284 years after its beginning, by express determination of the government of the time
