The origins of the castle of Sesimbra date back to the 9th century, the period of the Muslim occupation of the territory. In 1165 it was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques, and in 1191 it was lost to the Almóadas. Its definitive reconquest was initiated by D. Sancho I, in 1199, who assigned the first foral to the village of Sesimbra, then located inside the monument.
During the entire Middle Ages, and given its strategic importance in defending the kingdom’s maritime and land borders, the castle has been the subject of numerous expansions.
The encounter of the mountain with the sea originated a cord of beaches of fine sand and transparent waters that we would only think to find in the Mediterranean as Figueirinha, Galapos and Portinho da Arrábida.
Preferred by the Franciscan frades who between the 16th and 19th centuries, inhabited the still existing Convent and meditated in the isolated chapels scattered by the Serra. Arrábida has excellent conditions for agriculture and grazing that give rise to high quality products. The wines that you will be able to know by following the Blue Coast Wine Route, which takes you to the friendly village of Azeitão where you can try some delicious cheeses.
