The Ajuda National Palace, the last official residence of the Portuguese monarchy, began to be built in 1796 and was the permanent residence of the Portuguese royal family from the reign of D. Luís I (1861-1889) until 1910, the year of the establishment of the Republic.
This museum is today the only visitable royal palace in Lisbon, which still preserves its rooms with the authenticity of the 19th century, constituting one of the most important decorative arts museums in the country.
In the same building you can visit the Royal Treasury Museum, which houses the royal treasury with the Portuguese crown jewels and the fine jewelry used in civil and religious ceremonies, as well as the most imposing tableware from an 18th century European royal table.
