Most famous red bridge in Portugal, once known has Salazar Bridge – name of the portuguese president dictator that order its construction in 1958. Climb up the Castle of Palmela – a huge fortification complex that stands atop ot the Arrabida Hill in that village. Appreciate the stuning views over the Tagus and Sado estuaries. This castle and wall provided a strategic defense line in the early Poruguese dynasties.

It is the second longest bridge in Europe, after the Crimean Bridge, and the longest one in the European Union. Construction began in February 1995; was opened to traffic on 29 March 1998, just in time for Expo 98, the World’s Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.
