Stop At: Cathedral of Evora (Se Catedral de Evora), Largo do Marques de Marialva Centro Histórico, Evora 7000-809 Portugal

The Cathedral is a good example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic and impresses with its grandeur. Enjoy the high choir, the majestic arches, the baptistry, the arch of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade and the chancel. To have the best view of the city, be sure to go up to the terrace (Admission fee not included).

Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: Pateo de Sao Miguel, Mario Chico broad, Evora 7000-802 Portugal

A stunning set of buildings classified as a National Monument since 1922. It is partially integrated into the Roman and medieval walls, that is, the walls of Évora.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Capela dos Ossos, Praca 1 de Maio, Evora 7000-650 Portugal

One of the striking features of the façade is a church porch with arches of different styles – a typical example of the “marriage” between Gothic and Moorish style found in so many monuments of this region in Portugal. Over the Manueline doorway we can see the emblems of the kings that commissioned its construction – D. João II and D. Manuel I – whose emblems were the pelican and armillary sphere respectively.

One particularity of the Church is that it has a single nave, terminating in a ribbed vaulted ceiling, that has the largest span of all Portuguese Gothic architecture. On the sides we can see twelve chapels, all covered in Baroque carved woodwork. The main chapel, dating from the early 16th century, still maintains important Renaissance features such as the pulpits. It’s well worth noting the harmonious decoration of stone, carved woodwork and azulejo tiles in the chapel of the third order, on one of the arms of the transept.

Inside, visitors can see the strange Bones Chapel, built during the Filippine period (17th-century). The pillars and walls are completely covered by bones. It’s also worth noting the late Renaissance doorway where the capitals of the columns seem to be decorated in a different manner according to whether one is looking from the exterior or interior.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Centro Historico de Evora, Evora 7000 Portugal

It is located within the city walls, so finish the afternoon with a walk around the medieval fence. The total distance from the walls is about 4 km, so you can choose to walk through only one of the sections or see them all and enjoy the view and architectural details.

Duration: 1 hour

Pass By: Muralhas de Evora, Largo das Alteracoes de Evora 4 Centro Histórico, Evora 7000-502 Portugal

The Walls of Évora present a wide variety of styles, marked by several alterations and restorations carried out at different times by different peoples, such as the Romans, the Visigoths, the Moors and the Medieval Portuguese.

Stop At: Monsaraz Castle and Walls, Largo do Castelo, Monsaraz 7200-175 Portugal

The route continues to Monsaraz, to experience a journey through time between medieval doors, labyrinthine streets, the schist floor and where you can breathe the tranquility already forgotten by modern times. As part of Monsaraz’s heritage, the medieval Castle and Tower of Menagem stand out. It is also imperative to visit the Igreja da Misericórdia, built in the 16th century, the Casa da Inquisition or the Casa da Cultura which occupies the old Church of Santiago, which has been in existence since the 13th century.

Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: Alqueva, Alqueva, Evora District, Alentejo

Going down the hill from the village of Monsaraz, you will find the access pier to Alqueva, the largest human made artificial lake in Europe and whose shoreline of the dam extends far beyond the entire length of mainland Portugal.
