The castle of Almourol, located on a small island that was already inhabited at the time of the Roman occupation of the peninsula, from the 8th century, was occupied by the Muslims, who will have conquered it to the Visigoths. In the context of the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, Almourol was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1129, who gave it to the Order of the Temple.
The primitive church dates back to the twelfth century, under the command of D. Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Templars, to serve as a burial ground for the Freires. The present church corresponds to the XIII century, to the reign of D. Afonso III, instituted like the most emblematic work of the national Gothic architecture. His planimetric model served as an example for other religious temples, both cathedral and conventual from north to south.

The Convent of Christ, in Tomar, belonged to the Order of the Templars. Founded in 1162 by the Grand Master of the Templars, Don Gualdim Pais the Convent of Christ still preserves memories of these monks knights and of the heirs of their position, the Order of Christ, which made this building their headquarters.
