The northern area of Lisbon, known as Parque das Nações, was built for the world exhibition Expo 98, when finally the river was returned to the city.

Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the station was inaugurated on 19 May 1998, as part of the celebrations marking the opening of the EXPO’98 world’s exhibition.
At the time of its opening it was considered the largest intermodal station in Portugal, winning the Brunel Award in the category of large new construction projects.

The Alfama neighbourhood is the oldest district of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river.
Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma meaning “hot fountains” or “baths”.

This is the oldest church in the city.
Built after que conquer of Lisbon by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147, the cathedral has survived many earthquakes and has been modified, renovated and restored several times.

Pass By: Praca Martim Moniz, Rua de Senhora da Saude, Lisbon 1100-586 Portugal
According to the legend, Martim Moniz was a knight participating in the Siege of Lisbon, during the Reconquest, led by King D. Afonso Henriques and sacrificed himself in the castle door preventing the defenders from fully closing it.
This heroic fact granted him to have his name given to one of the squares of downtown Lisbon, where a multitude of different world cultures can be found together.

Pass By: Praca da Figueira, Travessa Nova de Sao Domingos 9 3 Esq., Lisbon 1100-372 Portugal
In the 16th century this square did not exist, with most of its area occupied by the Hospital Real de Todos os Santos, the most important in Lisbon.
After the great earthquake of 1755 which destroyed most of the city, the hospital was greatly damaged and was demolished around 1775.
The large area previously occupied by the hospital was turned into an open market square and, late 19th century, a large covered market was built. This market existed until 1949, when it was demolished. Since then the square has been an open space.

Stop At: Rossio Square, Praca Dom Pedro IV, Lisbon 1100-026 Portugal
Officially named King Pedro the 4th square, Rossio translates as a large gathering space.
It’s the heart of the Baixa downtown area, surrounded by late 18th century buildings from the city reconstruction plan issued by Marquês de Pombal after the 1755 earthquake.
From here you have access to walking streets towards the Riverside, through rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio.

Pass By: Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco), Avenida Infante Dom Henrique 1C, Lisbon 1100-053 Portugal
Commonly known as Terreiro do Paço because it was the location of Paços da Ribeira (Royal Ribeira Palace) until the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
After the earthquake, the square was completely remodeled as part of the rebuilding plan of Marquês de Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo.
It is actually still one of the biggest city squares in Europe.

The main pedestrian boulevard of Lisbon downtown connecting Rossio square to Praça do Comércio.
Closer to the Riverside you can see the colossal triumphal Arco da Rua Augusta, built in the 19th century to celebrate the reconstruction of the city after the 1755 earthquake.

Pass By: Praca dos Restauradores, Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon 1250-188 Portugal
Surrounded by 19th and early 20th century buildings, this square is dedicated to the restoration of the independence of Portugal, december 1st. 1640, after sixty years of Spanish domination.
The obelisk in the middle of the square, from 1886, carries the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese Restoration War after 1640.
From here begins Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon’s main central boulevard with large sidewalks decorated by the portuguese “calçada”, a traditional art still done by hand piece by piece with light and dark stone cubes.

Pass By: Praca Marques do Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade Rotunda, Lisbon Portugal
Sebastião José de carvalho e Melo, was the state secretary of King D. José I at the time of the 1755 earthquake.
From many other things, he was the master planner of the Lisbon downtown reconstruction plan. The actual statue, from the 20th century shows the acknoledgement of the city to his work.

Parque Eduardo VII is a public park with an area of 26 hectares near Avenida da Liberdade and Marquês de Pombal Square.
Its name pays homage to King Edward VII from United Kingdom who visited Portugal in 1902, to strengthen the relations between the two countries.

One of the historic neighbourhoods of Lisbon, that started from the economic growth of the city after the 16th. century.
The need to expand due to population growth and commercial development of Lisbon, led to the construction of a dense residential and commercial area, that still keeps its traditional character these days.
Closer to Bairro Alto, Chiado area connects to the downtown, being now a trendy art and fashion business district.

Pass By: Basilica da Estrela, Praca da Estrela 12, Lisbon 1200-667 Portugal
Ordered to build by Queen Maria I of Portugal as the fulfilment of a vow, the Basilica is not only a product of the Queen’s particularly fervent devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, but remains the most important architectural endeavour of her reign.
The huge church has a giant dome, and is located in a hill in what was at the time the western part of Lisbon and can be viewed from far away.
The style is similar to the Mafra National Palace, in late baroque and neoclassical with twin bell towers in front including statues of saints and allegoric figures.

Pass By: 25 de Abril Bridge, Praca 25 de Abril Almada, Lisbon 1950-358 Portugal
The main passage that reunites the south with the center of Portugal.
Finished in 1966, it shares the project concept with the San Francisco – Oakland Bay bridge and is one of the most popular and photographed monuments of Lisbon.

Built in 1940 for the Great Exhibition of the Portuguese World in the same year, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a monument celebrating the Portuguese Age of Discoveries.
In 1960 it was renewed to celebrate the 5th centenary of the death of Henry the Navigator, the great entrepreneus of the portuguese expansion overseas.
