King Manuel I commissioned this fortified tower to be built near the harbor from where the portuguese “caravelas” were sailing overseas to protect the fast growing city of Lisbon.

During World War II and the Post-War period, the area’s royal affiliations intensified, as many heads of European royal houses and deposed monarchs, made their home in Cascais and Estoril, finding refuge in Portugal’s neutrality.

Acquired in the mid 19th century by Francis Cook, a wealthy English merchant who started to work on the remains of the old house to create an impressive summer residence for his family.
The design was influenced by Romanticism and Mudéjar Moorish Revival architecture with Neo-Gothic elements as a fine example of the Sintra Romanticism, along with other nearby estates.
