The Monserrate Farm was leased by Gerard de Visme (1789), a wealthy English merchant, who built a neo-Gothic house there. William Beckford subleased Monserrate in 1793-1794, but by 1809, when Lord Byron visited the estate, the house was already in ruins. The sublime aspect of the property was a source of inspiration for the poet, who sang Monserrate in his work Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, after which the farm became a must-visit for foreign travelers, especially English, who described it in numerous travel accounts. and illustrated it in engravings. The surrounding gardens received species from around the world and were organized by geographic areas, including Mexico, reflecting the diverse origins of plants and setting scenery along paths, among ruins, nooks, lakes and waterfalls. Upon reaching Boca do Inferno it is possible to contemplate the beauty of the place from above, however there is also a path that leads to the other side of the “arch” of the cavity, through which the water enters.
