The palace is surrounded by a large park full of greenery, pavilions, fountains and turrets.
Quinta da Regaleira is also known as the palace of the millionaire Monteiro. This wealthy businessman was obsessed with mysticism and built a magnificent Gothic masterpiece in Sintra, with a chapel, a beautiful park, fountains and grottos. The palace has five floors (ground floor, three upper floors and a basement). The ground floor consists mainly of a series of corridors connecting the living rooms. On the first floor are the bedrooms and dressing rooms, and on the second floor are Carvalho Monteiro’s office and the servants’ rooms. On the third floor is the ironing room and in the basement are the male servants’ bedrooms, the kitchen with lift and the storeroom. Among the many attractions of the park are two inverted towers that resemble wells. These wells were never used as a source of water, but were used for ceremonial purposes during initiation ceremonies.
