The production of Pastéis de Belém began in 1837, according to an old recipe from the Jerónimos Monastery that is reborn daily in its factory using the same artisanal processes. Pastéis de Belém today provide the taste of ancient Portuguese sweets.

The Torre de Belém is a fortification on the right bank of the Tagus River, it was originally surrounded by water throughout its perimeter, over the centuries it was surrounded by the beach, until today it was incorporated into dry land. The monument is an architectural icon of the reign of D. Manuel I, in a synthesis between the keep tower of medieval tradition and the modern bastion, where artillery pieces were placed.

We stopped to see this beautiful monument up close.

The Monument to the Discoveries was erected in 1940 on the occasion of the Portuguese World Exhibition to honor the historical figures involved in the Portuguese Discoveries. The current replica, in concrete and stone, is later, having been inaugurated in 1960.
