Built in response to Our Lady’s request “I want you to make here a chapel”. Our Lady appeared full of light and spoke here to the Little Shepherds in May, June, July, September and October 1917.

Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima

The three Little Shepherds were on May 13 1917 in this place playing at the top of the of Cova de Iria’s hillside making a “small wall” and “suddenly saw what seemed to be a flash of lightning”. Years later the Basilica was built (between 1928 and 1953).

See the tombs of the three Little Shepherds inside the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. You will have the chance to get close to them.

Basilica of the Holy Trinity

In 1973, the intention arose to build a new church in the Sanctuary of Fatima. The first stone was laid in 2004. It was inaugurated on October 12, 2007, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Apparitions. The whole church is white in color, covered with stone from the region: Branco do Mar (White from the Sea). The Basilica has a total of 8,633 seats, including 76 for people with limited mobility. Its construction was paid completely with donations from visitors.

The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, popularly known as Monastery of Batalha, was built by King D. João I, in fulfillment of a promise made on August 14, 1385 to Our Lady, should he win the Castilian army. The Battle against the Spaniards took place in Aljubarrota, south of Batalha and was won by the Portuguese king who hurried to fulfill his promise. The Monastery of Batalha has been is a symbol of Portugal’s independence and is a testament of to the beginning of the second royal dynasty in Portugal, the Avis Dynasty.
Classified in 1983 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Monastery of Batalha results in one of the most imposing Gothic monuments in the entire Iberian Peninsula.

Enjoy the fantastic panoramic view over the beach of Nazare from ‘Sitio,’ the highest point of the village. Nazare is a traditional fisherman’s village, a summer destination and a big waves surfers paradise.

At the top sits the Ermida da Memoria chapel, famous for the legend of the miracle that Our Lady made to prevent the horse of the nobleman, D. Fuas Roupinho, leaping over the precipice. True or not, at the Suberco Viewpoint you still can see the mark left on the rock by one of the horse’s hooves on that foggy morning in 1182.
At the site, you can also visit the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazare.

Huge waves of Praia do Norte
A 30 meters wave in Nazaré. How can we explain it?
1. The refraction of the wave due to the difference in depths between the Continental Shelf and the Canyon;
2. Overtopping a topographic barrier (steep vertical variation);
3. Positive interference between the wave travelling from the Canyon and the wave propagating across the northern continental shelf;
4. Littoral Drift.
The combined effect of these processes significantly increases the wave height, which can reach values much higher than those observed offshore.
The waves break when their height is approximately equal to the local water depth.

You will complete the tour in Óbidos. This fortified village is one of the ex-libris of Portuguese heritage and will be a surprise to you, since it is a medieval village surrounded by the walls of its castle, serving as a living, inhabited testimony that has remained almost unchanged since the end of the XVII century. Walking through the streets of Óbidos is to make an appointment with the past, through its sidewalks and Gothic houses from the 16th and 17th century.
