Stop At: Park and National Palace of Pena, Estrada da Pena, Sintra 2710-609 Portugal
Pena National Palace, Located at the top of the Sintra mountains and the fruit of the dreams of an artist king, D. Fernando II, the Pena Park and Palace are Portugal’s finest examples of 19th century Romanticism. Must stop for those visiting the romantic and mysterious Sintra Village. After visiting the Park and Pena Palace, composer Richard Strauss wrote: “Today is the happiest day of my life. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve seen. This is the true Klingsor Garden – and there, up on high, is the Holy Grail Castle.”

In the time between visits to the monuments, you can stroll through the narrow winding streets in the old town where you will find a variety of restaurants, shops with typical articles of the region and the famous “Piriquita” Tea House, known for their delicious regional pastry called “Travesseiros de Sintra”, a must for anyone visiting Sintra.

Visit to Sintra National Palace. Also known as Paço Real, the Palace was founded by the Arabs and later became the residence of the Portuguese royal family from the 12th century. It is unique in that it features its 33-meter-tall twin chimneys and contains collections of Hispanic-Moorish tile and decorative arts. It was in Paço Real, in the courtyard of the Audience, that Dom Sebastião heard the first reading of the epic poem Os Lusíadas by Luís Vaz de Camões himself.

Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, historical and cultural monument that will dazzle you for its mysterious and passionate architecture. The Palace is surrounded by a lush forest full of plants and trees from all over the world, statues of the gods, labyrinthine caves, fountains, ponds and the spiral staircase of the dark initiatory well. Descending the Quinta da Regaleira Initiative Well is an experience you will not forget!
