Our first stop is a visit to the Criolense Kitchen Club, where we will enjoy Brazilian tapas. During this stop, we’ll explore the connections between LGBTQ+ history in Portugal and the regulation of sexuality and gender, tracing its roots back to colonial times. This includes examining how Indigenous erasure and marital laws in the colonies played a role in shaping these regulations.
We will make a brief stop to admire a mural dedicated to the Carnation Revolution. During this visit, you’ll learn about the dictatorship and the historical context that led to the revolution, how it unfolded, and its lasting impact on Portuguese society.
VALSA is an immigrant and queer-owned cultural association where you will get the opportunity to savor artisanal sourdough pizzas while immersing yourself in Queer culture. This venue is an important venue for the LGBTQ+ community, offering a unique combination of flavors, art, and authenticity. This is the spot you can experience the local queer nightlife in a chill vibe and really connect with other locals.
We will end the tour in a queer-owned bar, where we will discuss the contemporary queer scene in Portugal, with a special focus on Lisbon. We’ll highlight the significance of associations and collectives that are leading important discussions and exploring potential solutions for the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, we’ll talk about the vital role of immigration in bringing a decolonial perspective, moving from traditional norms to truly serve a broader and more diverse community.
