Sintra é uma cidade turística no sopé da serra de Sintra, em Portugal, perto da capital, Lisboa. Durante muito tempo um santuário real, o seu terreno arborizado está cravejado de quintas e palácios em tons de pastel. O Palácio Nacional de Sintra, de estilo mourisco e manuelino, distingue-se pelas duas deslumbrantes chaminés idênticas e pelos elaborados azulejos. O Palácio Nacional da Pena do século XIX, no topo da colina, é conhecido pelo design extravagante e pelas vistas deslumbrantes.

A padaria que mais tarde viria a ser conhecida por Piriquita foi fundada em 1862, há cerca de 160 anos. Trabalhavam lá Amaro dos Santos, padeiro de profissão e sua mulher Constância Gomes.
O nome Piriquita advém da alcunha que o rei D. Carlos I deu a Constância Gomes, baseada na sua baixa estatura. Foi o Rei D. Carlos I que encorajou o casal a confecionarem as famosas Queijadas, um doce que desfrutava durante os seus verões em Sintra. O sucesso foi imediato e depressa a padaria se transformou em Pastelaria.
