Visit: Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Praca do Imperio Belém, Lisbon 1400-206 Portugal

Visit the Jerónimos Monastery, one the most important tourist attraction in Lisbon and definitely the most impressive symbol of Portugal’s power and wealth during the Age of Discovery.

The religious structure was created by Diogo de Boitaca, a Portuguese architect, to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s return from India. The building began on January 6, 1501, and took until the seventeenth century to complete. The architecture is primarily Manueline in style (Portuguese late Gothic).

The tombs of Vasco da Gama and poet Luis de Camões, author of the epic The Lusiadas, in which he honors the exploits of Da Gama and his compatriots, were put inside beside the entryway. Other notable Portuguese figures buried here include King Manuel and King Sebastião, as well as writers Fernando Pessoa and Alexandre Herculano.
