Due to its magnificence, the monumental architectural complex of Mafra (palace, convent and basilica) bears witness to the opulence of the court of D. João V (1707-1750), the monarch who ordered it to be built, and the most important Portuguese Baroque monument.
Located between the majestic Palácio de Mafra and Tapada de Mafra, with a typically Baroque layout, Jardim do Cerco was created by D. João V in 1718.
This fabulous garden consists of two distinct parts: the Botanical Garden, with an aesthetic concern, containing the lake, and the Wood, with a more scenic character.
When visiting this magical space, in Jardim do Cerco, you enter an idyllic baroque universe, of kings and princes, with wonderful water games, among plane trees, cedars and holly: the perfect garden for the majestic work of the Mafra Palace.
