The University of Coimbra was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It was founded in Lisbon in 1290 and was definitely transferred to Coimbra in 1537.

In addition to the Joanina Library you will be able to discover within the university the Chapel of S. Miguel, Medieval and Academic Prison, Arms Room, Capelos Room, Private Exam Room and University Tower.

In the garden you can visit the so-called Fonte dos Amores and Fonte das Lágrimas, as they were the scene of the love of Prince Pedro (future Pedro I of Portugal) and the noble D. Inês de Castro.
