Here you will visit the historical center of the city, which today is home to one of the most important Portuguese universities. Next, climb the Tower that stands as the highest point of mainland Portugal, at an incredible 1993 meters high. Serra da Estrela is one of the few Portuguese regions blessed with snow, and it is covered every year with an extensive white blanket in the height of winter. It’s also here where you’ll find the only ski resort in the country. Take in the fantastic winter views from this vantage point.

Stop At: Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela, Serra da Estrela Portugal

History says that this parish arose from a cluster of shepherd’s huts that used the pastures for their sheep and goats. At the end of the 19th century, the penetration of the Serra da Estrela began to occur through scientifically organized excursions. The Elderberry has become a mandatory station or point of support and passage for the explorers. From an isolated and unknown village, it became well known to the world.

Eventually it will be time to learn about one of the products that make Portugal so distinctive in the world. Yes, you guessed it, its bread. The Bread Museum, based in Seia, is a private museum that aims to collect, preserve, and showcase artefacts of Portuguese bread making. From 1996 until its opening in September, 2002, the collection was developed through antique store purchases, bookstore purchases, auctions, or donations. In a place like Serra da Estrela, it is impossible to ignore its typical gastronomy. Bread, as well as mountain cheese and sausages, are typically fare to this region.
