Oeiras Trip Overview
Visit to Rio Maior “Salinas”, the only place in Portugal where there is salt and no sea.
From there, we’ll go to Santarém “Portas do Sol”, a lovely garden, at the Santarém Wall, where we can take wonderfull pictures.
After, we will go to Salvaterra de Magos, where we will visit the Royal Fanconry, and some other interesting spots.
Escaroupim, a fishermen small village will be than visited.
Somewhere in between, we will have lunch.

What to Expect When Visiting Oeiras, Central Portugal, Portugal

RIO MAIOR – “SALINAS”
In “Salinas” de Rio Maior, we will learn why and how can we have salt, although there is no sea around. The secret is that inside Serra dos Candeeiros, there is a huge Salt Yolk, and with the rain it melts and turns water 7 times more salted than sea water. So from spring till end of summer, due to evaporation, lots of salt can be found there. We will be able to to buy some artifacts made with this product. Little pices of Art, you can take home with you.
SANTARÉM – “PORTAS DO SOL”
In this little corner of Santarém, we find a wonderful garden, inside the Wall, where we can take a good look at Lezíria of Ribatejo, take wonderful pictures, and relax a little bit.
After leaving Santarém, we will visit one of the most typical villages in Ribatejo:
SALVATERRA DE MAGOS. In here, we may visit the ROYAL FALCONRY, which has been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, by UNESCO, in Dec. 2016.
FALCOARIA REAL DE SALVATERRA DE MAGOS Here, we can find around 30 species of birds; interactivity of visitors through multimedia elements; flight and training demonstration of several birds; staged “prey capture”.
Some more points of interest may be visited for ex: Main church, Royal Ditch Pier and Bridge, Arneiro Fountain.
ESCAROUPIM
What to do in ESCAROUPIM: – To visit a Typical House of the 30th/40th – – Time as stopped in this house, and everything remains in the same place; clothes, dishes, furniture; To visit the River Museum – In this museum, the history of the fishing art can be learned. Several fishing articles and fishermen clothes can be seen, and we can also know interesting things about the river itself; Depending on the hours and will of the visitors, unforgettable lunch or dinner can be eaten in a lovely and typical restaurant, in ESCAROUPIM
Return to Lisbon around 5PM.
