Stop At: Jardim de Santa Barbara, R. Dr. Justino Cruz, Braga 4700-314 Portugal

These small but attractive public gardens are located adjacent to the eastern wing of the 14th century Archbishop’s Palace. The garden takes advantage of the historic backdrop and also incorporates the medieval arches that remain of an arcade from the palace. Laid out in the 1950s the garden was designed by Jose Cardoso da Silva in the Romantic style, in keeping with its surroundings.
There are other features from the palace utilised throughout the geometric layout of the garden such as old statues, cornices and coats of arms. At the centre of the garden is a statue of Saint (Santa) Barbara on a fountain.

The Santa Barbara Garden is open all year around and is fairly central to Braga. It is a great spot to escape the bustle of the city and relax amongst the greenery and beautifully laid out beds.

Stop At: Mosteiro de Sao Martinho de Tibaes, N.0 59 Rua do Mosteiro, Braga 4700-565 Portugal

The Benedictine Monastery of Tibães was built on the site of a former Roman villa called Tevilanis, and was founded by Saint Martin of Dume in the 6th century during the Sueve reign of Teodomiro. In 1078, the knight Paio Guterres da Silva decided to rebuild the monastery. Later on, in 1567, this became the Portuguese and Brazilian headquarters of the Order of Saint Benedict.

In the 17th century, the current building was completed. It was one of the most grandiose in the country (with four cloisters) and richly decorated according to the plans of Manuel Álvares. Among other points of interest, there is the gold-leafed carving, the retables and Baroque adornment of André Soares (1750), the Baroque organ (1786) and the examples of tiling. It was at that time a truly practical school in the decorative arts holding great influence over Portuguese artistic trends of the 17th and 18th centuries.
