What makes Porto Historic Center Tour a unique experience ?
Porto Cathedral, located in the heart of the city, is one of the oldest and most important structures in the city. Construction began in the 12th century and combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. The cathedral offers panoramic views of the city and the Douro River, and its interior is adorned with beautiful Portuguese tiles.
This iconic bridge, built between 1881 and 1886, is one of the most recognizable images of Porto. Designed by engineer Théophile Seyrig, the iron bridge connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia and offers spectacular views of the Douro River and the riverbanks of both cities. The bridge has two decks: an upper deck, used by the metro and pedestrians, and a lower deck, used by cars and pedestrians.
Located in Vila Nova de Gaia, Serra do Pilar offers one of the best panoramic views of Porto. At the top of the hill is the Serra do Pilar Monastery, a 16th-century monument that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery is known for its unique circular church and cloister.
This 18th-century Baroque church is located near Praça da Batalha. The façade is covered in around 11,000 blue and white tiles depicting scenes from the life of Saint Ildefonso and the Gospel, making it a stunning example of Portuguese tile art.
Rua de Santa Catarina is Porto’s main shopping street. Lined with shops, cafés, restaurants and the famous Café Majestic, this street is a great place to shop and enjoy Porto’s vibrant atmosphere. Many of the buildings have colourful tile facades and classic Portuguese architecture.
This grand avenue is considered the heart of Porto. Flanked by imposing buildings, many in the Beaux-Arts style, the avenue leads to Praça da Liberdade, where the statue of D. Pedro IV stands. Porto City Hall, with its impressive clock tower, is located at the top of the avenue.
The Carmo Church is famous for its beautiful side façade covered in blue and white tiles depicting the founding of the Carmelite Order. Built in the 18th century, the church is a notable example of the Portuguese Rococo style. Interestingly, the Carmo Church is located next to the Carmelite Church, but the two are separated by a narrow house.
Built between 1619 and 1628, the Carmelite Church is a beautiful example of the Baroque style. Although it is located next to the Carmelite Church, it is a separate church belonging to the Discalced Carmelite Order. The interior is richly decorated with gilded woodwork and impressive paintings.
The Clérigos Tower is one of Porto’s most iconic landmarks. Designed by architect Nicolau Nasoni and completed in 1763, the 75-metre-high tower offers stunning views over the city. The 240-step climb is worth it for the panoramic views of Porto and the Douro River.
Built in the 19th century, the Palácio da Bolsa is a magnificent neoclassical building that served as Porto’s stock exchange. Its lavish interior includes the famous Salão Árabe, inspired by the Alhambra in Granada, and several other richly decorated rooms. The Palácio da Bolsa is a symbol of Porto’s mercantile prosperity and is often used for events and guided tours.
