What makes Private Tour through Serra da Estrela Park and its famous cheese a unique experience ?
Here we will visit a cheese maker that produces, since an early age, cheeses of Serra da Estrela, in a traditional way. It is a family-tradition, with the knowledge inherited from the ancestors.
Pinhanços is a Portuguese town in Seia, Portugal, with 716 inhabitants (2011). Its settlement dates back to the arab era, as evidenced by the existence of a moorish cemetery, of which there are still some graves.
Seia assumes itself as a privileged place of encounter with nature in its purest state and deserves to be visited by those who come to meet the most imposing Portuguese mountain.
(OPTIONAL)
The Museum of Bread is a must-visit place, where you can do a journey to the world of the Portuguese bread, learn in practice how to make it and acknowledge the Cycle of Bread, the Art of Bread, and it’s social and religious aspect at the three rooms Museum.
This is one of the must-see points in any Serra da Estrela itinerary, and it has the title of the highest village in Portugal, with 1200 meters altitude.
You will marvel at the surrounding traditions and natural surroundings of this ancient village and must try the famous Serra cheese.
You can visit the river beach, the Ethnographic Museum, water mills, the Parish Church of Sabugueiro, among other beautiful and unique views this town has to offer.
A mysterious spot that seems to have been taken from an authentic movie, but it is very real.
This is where the biggest water reservoir in the region of Serra da Estrela was built from an already existing lake.
Covão dos Conchos is just like a movie scenery.
This is a circular opening with waterfall in a pond in the Mountain.
Although it seems natural, this charm was man made and it actually serves to lead the waters of Ribeira das Naves to the Comprida Lagoon.
The Tower is the highest point in Serra da Estrela in mainland Portugal, and the second highest in Portugal (only the Pico Mountain, in the Azores, has the highest altitude – 2351 m).
The Tower has the unusual feature of being accessible until it’s top by a paved road, at the end of which there is a roundabout with a symbolic monument of the Tower and a geodetic landmark.
This is the only snow ski resort in Portugal on winters.
(ON FOOT)
Covão da Ametade is one of the most symbolic and beautiful places in Serra da Estrela.
It is located at the beginning of the Zêzere Glacier Valley.
This is a place of tranquillity where you can hear birds chirping and the water stream.
Along the 15 km long road, there are several points where we can pull the car over to calmly enjoy the wonderful landscapes of this authentic enchanted valley.
The highest river beach is located also in this area of the country.
It attracts tourists and locals in the summer.
We will pay a visit to the river spring, the fifth longest river, and that has it’s path entirely inside the country.
The Cabeça do Velho – which can be translated to “the head of the elder” – is one of the most sui generis rock formations of serra da Estrela.
This is a natural rock formation that our brain, sees the face of an old man through a phenomenon called pareidolia.
The view has, of course, incited the locals’ imagination and a folk legend was born.
(OPTIONAL)
On top of the beautiful village of Folgosinho, on the northern slope of Serra da Estrela, Folgosinho Castle was a defensive triangle in the Mondego River valley, along with that of Linhares and Celorico da Beira.
The origins of the Castle are diffuse, saying popular knowledge that its foundation was attributed to the warrior Viriato, who was born here, while other archaeological studies point to a medieval foundation, continuing the settlement of the region.
(OPTIONAL)
*Medieval village of the century 12th century*
Linhares da Beira has a unique architectural diversity, the result of the legacy of various eras.
In 1169, he received his first floral, attributed by D. Afonso Henriques.
But only later, in the reign of King Dinis, its imposing castle was erected, a landmark of the village and the main visiting card of our day.
To wander the streets of this museum village is to make a journey into the past.
