Quinta Grande Trip Overview

‘Fajã’ means a flat piece of land at the sea level formed by materials detached from the cliffs. You will get to know Fajã dos Padres, a fertile and unique place that was owned by the jesuits (hence the name ‘dos Padres’) for more than 150 years.

The experience starts with an incredible 3 minutes cable car trip that comfortably will transport you from Quinta Grande to Fajã dos Padres, along a huge cliff over 300 meters high.

For about an hour, you will walk along ancient paths opened along the orchards of subtropical fruit trees.

During the tour you will get to know the story of this place, that is inhabited since the beginning of Madeira island colonisation. You’ll learn the methods used for farming a number of subtropical fruits, some quite exotic. The history of the vine and wine of Madeira, and the reasons for having promoted its culture throughout the centuries in this remote but so fertile piece of land always generates a particular interest among visitors.

Fajã dos Padres is an organic farm with a unique location by the sea, on the south coast of Madeira Island. It can be accessed only by cable car or by sea.

The Fajã has an exclusive pebble beach in all it’s extension, and a restaurant recognised by using locally grown organic produce and for serving especially fresh fish. It has a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea, and some showers and cabins available for visitors.
