The Romans made their way to Portugal during the Second Punic War, in the 3rd century BC. The colonization of the present-day Alentejo brought about the construction of several urban centres: Beja, once known as Pax Iulia, Évora as Ebora Liberalitas Iulia, and Ammaia as Civitas Ammaiensis.
