Why choose this Setubal District tour ?
Join us on this tour departing from Évora to discover some of the region’s renowned Roman sites, including a religious space (the Roman Temple of Évora), a Roman villa (Torre de Palma), and a Roman town (Ammaia).
The Romans made their way to Portugal during the Second Punic War, in the 3rd century BC. The colonization of the present-day Alentejo brought about the construction of several urban centres: Beja, once known as Pax Iulia, Évora as Ebora Liberalitas Iulia, and Ammaia as Civitas Ammaiensis. In addition to these urban centres, Roman colonists and those indigenous to the region lived in other settings, such as small rural settlements or extensive Roman villas.
Your tour guides are trained archaeologists and look forward to showing you some spectacular sites from Portugal’s Roman past.

What makes Private Romans & Ruins Full Day Tour from Evora by Archaeologists a unique experience ?
Our tour will commence in the captivating historical centre of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our meeting point will be the renowned Roman Temple of Évora, famously referred to as the Temple of Diana, at 9:00am. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to delve into the fascinating history of this remarkable structure and discover more about the captivating Roman era of Évora. We will then embark on the 1 hour and 15 minute drive to Torre de Palma.
While en route to the Roman villa of Torre de Palma, situated a little over an hour away, we will continue our discussion. At this site, you will learn more about the Roman villa culture of Portugal and have the opportunity to visit the charming museum, the well-preserved Roman structures, and, most notably, the exquisite collection of beautiful mosaics. You will have some free time to explore Torre de Palma at your own pace, and once everyone is ready, we will proceed to our next stop – lunch, around 45 minutes away.
Although lunch is not included in the tour, we believe that one should have a beautiful setting to enjoy their meal. In turn, we will stop to eat in the town of Castelo de Vide, approximately 45 minutes away from Torre de Palma. Here, there are a few options for lunch (not provided) at a local cafe or restaurant. If you desire, you can even explore the town and medieval castle.
After enjoying a light lunch, we will reconvene and make our way to the nearby Roman city of Ammaia, a mere 5-minute journey. Here, we will guide you through the museum, as well as the extensive ruins scattered across the expansive site. Following the guided tour, you will have the freedom to explore at your leisure. Around 3:00pm we will gather once again to commence our return journey to Évora, with an estimated arrival time of approximately 4:30pm.
